Cleft and lip palates are conditions wherein the lip or mouth has not formed properly during the puppy’s development inside the mother’s womb. Genetics is definitely the most common cause of this condition. However, the mother’s health during pregnancy increases the risk of the puppies having this condition.
Generally, dogs with this condition should not be used for breeding, but irresponsible breeders only care about the money. If there are puppies with cleft lips or palates in the litter, they are usually abandoned, surrendered at the shelter, or euthanized. The condition is rectified with surgery, but breeders do not want to waste money on puppies that are hard to sell. Fortunately, some good people are still willing to accept dogs with this condition and welcome them into their homes.
Such was the story of an American Bully named Big Rig. He was born with a cleft lip and palate. He and his brother Oliver were taken in by a nonprofit group called Road Dogs and Rescue. They were surrendered when they were about four to five weeks old because their clefts were considered defects and undesirable.
The puppies were fragile and had pneumonia. They were not eating on their own, so they had to be tube-fed. For the first few days, they had to be closely monitored. Big Rig almost died because he contracted pneumonia for the second time.
Fortunately, Big Rig pulled through. Despite his many health issues, he grew up stronger and healthier. He loved food and believed that every treat was meant for him.
He is playful, friendly, and loved being the center of attention. He brings happiness to the house with his antics.
They use his Instagram account to show how he has thrived and is now living his best life. Through his story, they raise awareness of issues with cleft palate puppies and help raise funds for Road Dogs and Rescue.
