The former owners of a Shih Tzu and Yorkie mix named Toby almost had him euthanized because of his special needs. Thankfully, the Florida Yorkie Rescue organization stepped in. And now, with a tiny customized wheelchair donated by New Hampshire-based company Walkin’ Pets, the one-pound pup can already move on his own.
Born with Hydrocephalus, Toby had a hard time moving around. His condition not only affected his mobility but also his vision and coordination. Because of this, his former owners thought about euthanizing him. Florida Yorkie Rescue agreed to take the dog in and care for him until he finds a more suitable home.
Florida Yorkie Rescue president and founder Kit DeRoche said they chose to rescue Toby because they believe every life is worth living. When the organization shared the details of Toby’s journey on social media, they caught the attention of the mobility company Walkin’ Pets. Moved by the tiny pup’s perseverance, the company decided to help him walk on his own.
Walkin’ Pets representatives flew from New Hampshire to Palm Beach, Florida, to personally meet Toby. They took measurements and customized a wheelchair for his small frame. Toby was able to adjust quickly and can now stand and walk around on his own comfortably.
DeRoche said she is confident that the wheelchair will help Toby strengthen his front legs. She also thinks that the pup feels optimistic about his future now that he has mobility.
In a string of good luck for Toby, DeRoche eventually decided to adopt him and give him a forever home. She said she hopes that others may find inspiration in Toby’s incredible journey and that they will be encouraged to give a special needs dog a chance. She added that people will never find a more grateful heart than that of a rescue dog.
