Blue Dozer and his best friend, an elderly Dachshund named OJ, have been living with their owner for many years. Unfortunately, their owner fell on hard times and was forced to sell her home. The woman lived in her car with Dozer and OJ for a time. Then she took the difficult decision to surrender them to an animal shelter since she could no longer afford to care for them.
She brought Dozer and OJ to the Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) shelter and urged the employees to have them adopted together. The employees quickly determined why the woman was requesting this. OJ was a senior dog that was deaf and blind, and Dozer was his guide. Dozer was extremely considerate toward OJ and refused to leave his side.
The shelter shared the story of the dogs on social media. After a few days, someone became interested and adopted them immediately. Everyone at the animal shelter was pleased that the dogs finally received a happy ending. They hoped to receive positive feedback from the new owners regarding the dogs’ integration into the new family.
However, they were stunned to discover that OJ had been abandoned on the street and rescued by Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center. Very likely, the new owners did not want to care for an elderly dog and abandoned him.
Christie Peters, the director of Animal Care and Control in Richmond, was appalled by what transpired. She and the other RACC employees contacted Dozer’s adoptive family and persuaded them to return him. OJ joyfully reconnected with his dear pal. Christie guaranteed that they would never again be parted.
There were numerous applications for their adoption, but the shelter was diligent in selecting the most suitable adopters. They did not want another failed adoption. They were adopted by a good family in Richmond after a few months.
Recently, OJ turned 15 years old. Both he and Dozer continue to have a loving existence with their adoptive family.
