One of the main obligations of dog owners is to give the correct type and quantity of food to their pets. Frequent walks or exercise are also required to maintain the dog’s health and maintain a good weight.
Kai, a Golden Retriever, was unable to get the necessary nutrients to maintain a healthy weight. His previous owners loved feeding him.
One day, they realized that the dog he was already 100 pounds overweight. They realized that they didn’t want an overweight pet and brought him to the veterinarian for euthanasia.
The veterinarian hesitated to euthanize Kai because he believed he may still live a healthy life. He reached out to Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue to adopt him.
When a woman named Pam Heggie first encountered Kai, she was astounded by his size. He looked like a large bear. However, Pam observed his cheerful disposition despite his terrible condition, so she adopted him in order to assist him.
Kai had difficulty moving. It took him a considerable amount of time to up the three steps into the home. Once inside, he collapsed on the floor, panting, and refused to move.
The veterinarian stated that Kai weighed 173 pounds and needed to reduce 100 pounds. Pam was devoted to helping him lose weight, even if it appeared to be a daunting challenge. She began offering him healthier food, which Kai readily accepted because he enjoyed eating anything. Next, they attempted the water treadmill, which he enjoyed.
Yet, Kai required a great deal of encouragement to exercise. Pam didn’t believe that he could run, so they began by strolling. Every day, she urged him to go a bit further. Nonetheless, he would lie down whenever he noticed a mud puddle.
Kai found Abby, Pam’s black Labrador retriever, to be a great help. She advised him to become more mobile. Pam understood that Kai must have been fatigued, but he continued on cheerfully.
Kai began to lose weight. Pam documented his achievements, such as when he could down the stairs on his own and when he could run in the park. One year later, Kai had shed all 100 pounds. Pam was very pleased with him.
Pam observed that Kai enjoyed meeting new people, so she enrolled him in therapy dog training. He met the requirements with flying colors. Pam once again experienced a moment of pride.
Kai led a happy and fulfilling life because his mother never gave up on him.
