Elections have always been chaotic, and that includes the one that recently concluded in the US. However, amidst all the doom, gloom, and commotion, there was one happy little nugget of joy. His name is Wilbur, and he is the French bulldog who has been elected as mayor of Rabbit Hash in Kentucky.
Wilbur’s election follows the small town’s annual trend of electing animals as their mayor. Lady Stone, a black-and-white border collie, announced the result of what was noted as the most important election that happened in 2020.
Amy Noland, Wilbur’s mom, explained that Rabbit Hash has never had an actual person as its mayor. According to her, this political trend started way back in the 1990s. A man named Don Claire thought that electing an animal as mayor of the town, not necessarily a dog, would be a great idea as a fundraising event.
To celebrate his win, Wilbur used his official Facebook page to thank all those who supported him. He noted that, for the last 24 hours, he got to meet lots of lovely people, and he cannot wait to meet many more.
The post further said that Wilbur was humbled and beyond thankful for the support that he received from far away and right at his home. He also encouraged his constituents to check out the news as the bright lights will shine on their historic town.
It has only been four months since Wilbur joined his family, and now he is taking on such a big role. Amy adopted Wilbur, who she described as an “anomaly” because he is a registered purebred dog by the American Kennel Club.
The town with less than 500 residents has had five dog mayors since the first one was elected. The last canine mayor was Bryann, the pit bull who served from 2016 to 2020. Amy said that this is not political. It only coincides with the presidential election.
