Dexter is a black Labrador that trained to become an elite drug sniffer for the Metropolitan Police. Sadly, Dexter was not cut out for police work because he was too friendly, sociable, and gregarious. The good news is, Dexter has been assigned a different role, and he’s been exceptional at it.
Not meant for police work
Dexter is a smart and friendly pup that’s been training to join England’s Metropolitan police. But his handler, PC Mike Sheather, thinks Dexter does not fit the role. Dexter has been showing signs of stress and lack of focus during his training sessions. So although Dexter has an excellent nose, his handler believes being a police dog isn’t his true calling.
Dexter’s handler also notes that the pup is too friendly and sociable. Dexter loves people. However, too much friendliness would get in the way of his duty if he ever joins the police.
PC Mike realized that while Dexter may not make an excellent police dog, he’ll likely become a stellar wellness dog. So, Dexter was appointed for such an important role and he’ll be working at none other than the Scotland Yard.
Dexter, the wellness dog
Since becoming Scotland Yard’s first-ever wellness dog, Dexter has shown how much he loves his job. Dexter brings his friendly and cheerful personality to work. He visits front liners and police officers who experience stress and trauma linked to their jobs and comforts them with his presence. He also brought joy to people who were overcome with wariness during the Coronavirus outbreak.
Working as a wellness dog proved to be an excellent career decision for Dexter. He makes people smile just by being around them and brings comfort to those who are mentally and physically exhausted while performing their duties. Dexter may not qualify to join the police department, but he is truly exceptional in his job as a wellness dog.
