Montego Bay Animal Haven, an animal rescue group based in St. James, Jamaica, has rescued a total of 145 Jamaican Brown Terriers, commonly known as “Mongrels,” from various streets in the country. Dwayne Anderson of Television Jamaica reported that the dogs were flown to Canada to have a better life.
Dwayne said that he and his news team were at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, where the dogs were loaded onto their flight. He shared that the dogs did not need to submit individual visas, but other documentation to prove they are healthy and parasite-free was required before traveling to Canada.
Montego Bay Animal Haven’s director, Dr. Tammy Browne, said that the dogs must be healthy, dewormed, fleas, tick, and mange-free before being given a health certificate by their veterinarian. The canines then will be taken to the government vet to double-check everything.
Tammy said that if the government sees that the dogs’ test results match the medical examinations they have done, the animals will receive a clearance that they are safe to travel out of the country.
The Jamaican government has also teamed up with various animal rescue organizations to help rid the streets of stray dogs because the state saw that making such efforts carries excellent economic benefits. The state also found out that animal-loving tourists who see dead or sick dogs in the streets of Jamaica are turned off from revisiting the country, which greatly impacts the tourism sector.
Amari, one of the rescued dogs, was missing her hind leg before being rescued by Tammy on a rainy day. Tammy recalled that Amari was just skin and bones when she first saw her, and she was happy that she helped change the dog’s life.
All the dogs have found their fur-ever homes, and it was all thanks to the animal rescue organizations who continue to help change the animals’ lives. Everyone is happy because the streets of Jamaica are becoming stray dogs-free.
