When her owner took her to the shelter, a beagle named Honey weighed 68 pounds, almost twice her healthy weight. Due to her oversized body, Honey couldn’t walk.
Due to her inability to move, she defecated and urinated on herself, which caused burn marks on her body.
Honey struggle with her body weight
Honey could only move by dragging her belly on the floor.
According to the WGRZ, the dog’s owner is an older woman with Dementia. The woman took her dog for euthanasia at SPCA Niagara County. The shelter workers thought that the dog was overweight because her owner overfed due to her condition.
Since SPCA is a non-killer shelter, Honey got another chance to live again. The shelter planned to help the dog lose weight and transform her into a healthy dog.
The vet examined the dog and discovered that she had a thyroid tissue that caused the weight gain. The vets prescribed medication and exercise programs to help her lose weight.
The shelter workers supported Honey to walk with a harness and held her up to prevent her belly from touching the floor. She used the harness for some time until she was able to walk on her own.
The dog’s recovery process
While recovering at a foster home, she walked, played around, and walked on a water treadmill twice a week. Her playful personality started to show up.
Honey’s foster mother, Sue Cable, acknowledged how the dog shed her weight fast. The shelter appreciates Sue’s dedication and effort towards helping Honey lose weight.
After six months of exercise, Honey managed to drop her weight by 38 pounds. The weight reduction will help her to live a healthy life.
