One pit bull called Ashlyn became the protector of a baby raccoon. And this story tells us just how Ashlyn met the animal and became its mentor and guide.
A woman named Kate received a call from a friend in June 2021 regarding a raccoon that got caught in a car tire. It was in poor condition and required emergency attention. Kate felt like she needed to help the raccoon.
Kate went to save the animal and carried it to her residence and fed it generously. Then, after three days, the raccoon improved and started to move about.
Ashlyn wanted to protect the raccoon when she first encountered it. The pit bull constantly observed the raccoon, and even became its foster mother. Eventually, the dog taught the raccoon how to sniff at things and find its way through fields of tall grass.
The raccoon would eagerly follow Ashlyn in an attempt to learn from her. The two creatures would spend hours exploring and playing in the forest. Kate was usually around to oversee and prevent them from wandering where they were not supposed to go.
The pit bull was able to adapt her behavior appropriately. When she is not playing with or instructing the raccoon, she is her regular hyperactive self. If the raccoon is around, she adopts a more serious attitude.
Kate permits the raccoon to come and go at will. Sometimes it would disappear for weeks before returning to Ashlyn. The pit bull always welcomed the raccoon and was friendly to it each time it returned.
Kate observed how the two creatures had learned from one another. The raccoon became more independent, whereas the dog became more patient and disciplined. Kate believed that the outcome would have been different if the two creatures had never met.
