Susana Jumali is a physician from Jakarta, Indonesia. Because of her passion for dogs, she has devoted her life to saving them. She is aware that many dogs are abandoned and sent to slaughterhouses, so she created an animal shelter to care for these unfortunate pets.
Susana founded the Pejaten Animal Shelter around the year 2009. Initially, there were just 70 dogs under the care of the shelter, but that number quickly climbed to 1,400. Some of the dogs were surrendered, while others were rescued from abusive owners, but the majority were rescued from slaughterhouses.
Susana does her hardest to save as many dogs from slaughterhouses as possible, but she acknowledges that it is not an easy assignment. It crushes her heart to see the state of the dogs in the slaughterhouses. The inhabitants of these regions bind the dog’s paws and jaws with cords. Unfortunately, many dogs were sold to slaughterhouses by their former owners due to poverty.
It has been stated that approximately 1 million dogs are butchered annually in Indonesia, a country notorious for serving dog meat in restaurants. Susana, however, never gives up. When she originally began her rescue quest, the shelter could only take in one or two dogs each week; however, the shelter is now able to save twenty canines per week.
However, according to Susana, the most difficult aspect of rescuing the dogs is caring for them. Susana’s job as a physician is rigorous, yet she always makes time for her dogs. Despite the difficulty of her work for the dogs, she will not stop because she considers it her calling.
Susana employs over 30 workers at the shelter to care for the dogs, but such a large staff is expensive. Susana needs approximately $29,000 to pay her employees and purchase dog food. Susana Jumali, we admire you for not letting this deter her from continuing to rescue additional dogs in need. Visit their shelter’s Facebook page to donate if you would like to help Susana and her staff help other dogs.
