It’s a well-known fact that dogs possess super senses and their instincts are always spot-on. But can they truly tell if they’re of the same breed? A new study is showing us that dogs can actually recognize whether another dog is a direct relation or of the same breed. No introductions are needed – they just know.
Lily, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, is living proof. She recently met another Staffy named Joey, and they instantly became friends.
They love playing together inside and outside of their house, and it was a joy to see. They’re two dogs who demonstrated that the study most likely is right on the dot.
The University of Exeter conducted a two-part study. In the first part, 48 dogs were shown photographs of either a close relative, a dog from the same breed, or a random breed.
The second part of the study showed 16 puppies photographs of either their mother or a female stranger. In both parts, the majority of the dogs picked photos of their breed and chose their closest relatives.
These findings are definitely fascinating and add another layer to our understanding of the canine brain. Future studies conducted on this topic are expected to give more insight. We need this to learn even more about how our furry friends think and process information.
Lily and Joey certainly took to each other quickly. That doesn’t happen unless a dog recognizes something about another dog that connects them. We are not surprised given the nature of dogs and their incredible instincts and super senses!
Our pups have an innate ability to connect with other dogs regardless of circumstance. We love that about them, and we pray they continue to be so until the end of time!
