Nick Hayworth is a fisherman who lives in San Diego, California. He has a fishing boat and is usually accompanied by his pet dog whenever he goes out to catch some fish.
The one-year-old German Shepherd called Luna is a natural-born swimmer. She loves the ocean and enjoys tagging along with his owner.
But on one of their fishing trips, Nick’s worst nightmare came true. Luna was on the rear end of a boat one minute, and when the fisherman came back, she was gone. He started looking around, but he couldn’t find his dog. He even turned off the engine so he could hear if the dog was barking.
There was nothing.
Search and rescue
Nick’s boat was two miles off an island near the San Diego coast. The island was being used by the US Navy as a Naval Base. The worried dog owner radioed the Navy to get some help. He also told them that his dog was a great swimmer, and there might be a chance that she headed towards the island.
For the next two days, they searched for the dog. As each hour passed, their hopes of finding her alive were getting smaller. On the third day, Nick went home.
Some Navy personnel still tried to look for the dog on their island, but after a week of fruitless search, they declared Luna to be lost at sea and presumed to be dead.
Alive
Five weeks after the dog went overboard, navy staff returning to the base were shocked to see a dog walking by the road. They stopped their vehicle and saw that the pooch matched Luna’s description. They called Nick right away.
Because Nick was out of town, his best friend immediately rushed to the base and confirmed that the pooch was indeed Luna. He was relatively in good health except for some weight loss.
Although they still don’t know how Luna managed to survive, Nick and the Navy personnel were glad that she was found and is now back with her owner.
That is all that really matters.
