While watching the morning news, Dr. Michael White, the director of the Harris Animal Shelter, learned that an abandoned pregnant Labrador was chained to the shelter’s gate. As the reporter stood outside the shelter’s door, Dr. White recognized the place where the dog had been abandoned. He quickly hurried to its rescue.
Janelle Bludau, a reporter for the television station KHOU 11, vowed to never abandon the dog until the shelter opened. She looked at the dog’s condition and despite the situation that it was in, she appeared okay. She kept wagging her tail as the news crew approached, as if it knew that they were there to help.
Her rescuers did not want her to remain chained. They were there to ensure that she was okay until professional help came.
The news crew was unaware of the level of help the dog required. Soon, Bludau met with Dr. White and they were about to learn the truth about the animal’s health. They discovered something that was quite unexpected.
During his arrival at the animal shelter, Dr. White examined the dog. He noticed that the dog was pregnant and carrying a significant number of puppies. She had a full stomach, and Dr. White believed that she would soon give birth to puppies. He decided to bring along the pregnant dog to guarantee a safe delivery.
The dog was under the strict supervision of Dr. White. A few days after Dr. White brought the dog home, she displayed contraction-like signs. That signified that she was nearing delivery.
Dr. White and his wife did not sleep until the dog gave birth. She gave birth to eleven healthy puppies.
Dr. White called the dog Janelle after a news reporter of the same name. The mother dog will care for the puppies until weaning and adoption.
