Many puppies born with rare congenital defects that can significantly affect their quality of life are euthanized. Some people can’t see the point of having these dogs treated especially if the treatment is expensive, and most of them are.
In Luther, Oklahoma, a puppy named Milo was born with a rare congenital defect that made his paws develop abnormally. Milo’s condition left his tiny paws to face the wrong way. This meant that he wouldn’t be able to walk or even stand normally.
However, despite his condition, Milo remained sweet and cuddly. He can often be loud and has opinions on just about everything his carers do. In most cases, Milo would have been euthanized.
Thankfully, an animal rescuer named Jennie Hays learned about Milo and decided to give him a second chance. Jennie runs an animal rescue organization called Oliver & Friends Farm Rescue and Sanctuary. Jennie stated that Milo was surrendered to her by a dog breeder because of his abnormality.
After consulting with Dr. Erik Clary, a vet from Oklahoma State University, they were able to decide to get Milo the complicated surgery he needed to correct his deformity and give him the life he deserved.
The surgery was complex and recovery also took a long time. Milo had pins in his elbows to keep them stable, and he also needed to be in splints. The rehab process will also take a long time but the veterinary team that performed the surgery is hopeful that Milo has a good chance to completely recover from the surgery.
Milo is a fighter and he wanted to live. He’s still a puppy and giving him a chance to live a normal life is truly the right decision. Thanks to Jennie and her team, Milo is finally getting that chance. Here’s a video featuring Milo’s story and how his rescuer gave him the chance to live a normal life.
