For centuries, humans have used dogs in the military. Ancient Romans used attack dogs to break the enemy’s lines and many dogs became loyal companions of famous generals and conquerors. Today, the US military is still training and deploying dogs to help serve the country.
Most military dogs today don’t only serve as attack dogs but they’re also trained to detect explosives and even enemy soldiers. Military dogs are trained so well that they become force multipliers to soldiers on the ground. Some military dogs have saved our soldier’s lives and many have given their lives to serve our country.
It’s only fitting that military service dogs have the best life after they’re retired from service. A dog named Bakk has served the United States for several years. Bakk served in South Korea and was assigned with Technical Sergeant Dustin Cain. Over the years of serving, Cain and Bakk developed a special bond, which made both of them inseparable.
Unfortunately, Cain was assigned elsewhere and Bakk had to remain in South Korea. After almost another year of service, the veterinarian looking after Bakk found that Bakk had a torn cruciate ligament, which is the dog’s version of the ACL. Bakk can no longer do his military duties and needed to be retired.
When Cain heard about Bakk’s retirement, he didn’t waste any time at all and looked for a way for him to adopt Bakk. Cain was able to find a way to adopt back through his contacts in the military. After applying to adopt Bakk, Cain was awarded the adoption and Bakk was soon on his way to his new forever home.
As soon as Bakk entered the room where his dad and his new family were waiting, Bakk immediately recognized his former handler and ran up to him to give him some puppy kisses. Bakk remembered Cain and he couldn’t be happier to be reunited with Cain. Bakk was finally home and his new family welcomed him with open arms.
Military service dogs like Bakk definitely deserve a loving forever home. Bakk may have been part of the military but he’s definitely still a dog that needs a family. Cain’s family instantly loved Bakk the moment they met him. Here’s a heartwarming video showing Bakk’s adoption and how he’s enjoying his retirement.
