Although there are kindhearted people who feed stray dogs, most strays rely on food scraps thrown in the garbage to eat. With no one to care for them, a lot of stray dogs end up malnourished or emaciated and die from starvation. It’s unfortunate to see that this still happens in today’s society. People still abandon their dogs in the streets instead of surrendering them in shelters.
A pit bull puppy named Merc was rescued as a stray. When Merc was found, he was in terrible shape. Merc was so thin and weak that he couldn’t even move. Merc was dying when rescuers found him.
When Merc was first taken to the vet to get assessed, he was so weak that he couldn’t walk by himself. Merc needed a lot of work to make a full recovery. At only a year old, Merc’s body scale score was only one out of nine, which means that he couldn’t get any thinner than his current condition.
Rescuers weren’t even sure how Merc survived in his condition. However, Merc surprised the rescuers when he laid down on his bed and picked up a toy to play. Merc showed that he wanted to live, and seeing Merc play with a toy gave hope to the rescuers.
Merc’s long road to recovery began. Merc’s recovery started in the animal hospital, where he needed to have multiple blood transfusions because of the severe anemia that was brought upon by starvation. It took the rescuers and animal hospital workers one day at a time to help Merc.
When Merc was able to walk by himself, he was released from the vet. However, Merc needed to go to the hospital again because of refeeding syndrome, which is very common in dogs that are malnourished. Eventually, Merc started bouncing back thanks to all the treatments he’s been getting.
Every day, Merc started to get stronger. He also started to explore his surroundings and beginning to show his sweet and playful personality. Merc loved to play fetch, and seeing the other dogs run only encouraged Merc to get stronger.
Merc eventually recovered and was finally able to run. Merc was wagging his tail out of happiness that he’s able to run and jump again. After a month, Merc was as healthy as ever. Merc shows his appreciation to his rescuers by giving them puppy kisses and cuddles every day.
