Border collies are amazing when it comes to herding sheep. They have been bred for that specific purpose. However, some collies excel more at this job, specifically those with more experience.
Kelly is a prime example of a border collie who’s mastered the art of herding. Whenever her owner needs a reliable dog, she’s the one for the job. Kelly is also responsible for teaching new dogs that come to her owner’s farm.
Kelly has been herding sheep for nine years. She is still as good as ever, but there’s one thing that’s changed. She caught a disease that affects her ability to digest food. As a result, the owner had to prepare special meals for her every day.
Kelly’s condition doesn’t affect her ability to perform her duty. However, the owner is aware that one day his dog will no longer be present. As such, the owner makes sure that Kelly teaches other border collies her herding ways.
A typical day in Kelly’s life consists of more than just work. She often spends her time playing in the fields with her siblings. All the while, her owner watches and contemplates the day when they’ll both retire.
Recently, a new border collie has been added to the family. His name is Jay, and he’s eager to learn the tricks involved in herding sheep. His inexperience showed during his first attempts at herding. Fortunately, Kelly was there to show him the ropes.
There will come a time when Kelly can no longer herd. When that happens, the younger dogs will replace her and continue her legacy. However, as of now, she’s still far from retiring and can go on for a few more years. She’s a dog who lives a graceful life, similar to the way she moves about.
