Overprotective dogs can be troublesome when the owners are expecting deliveries. A good example of this problem is a dog named Loulou. She always tries to bite any deliveryman that comes through the front gate of her owner’s home. The owners had to call a professional dog trainer to help them.
A well-known dog trainer named Victoria Stilwell visited the house of dog owners, Mario and Dianne. The two of them could not figure out how to get Loulou to stop attacking delivery personnel.
Victoria showed the couple a good technique to make Loulou understand that her behavior is unacceptable. Whenever she tried to bark at someone in front of the gate, Loulou would be escorted back inside the house.
If Loulou was brought outside and she does not bark, then she is rewarded with a snack. Dianne couldn’t believe what she saw. For the first time, Loulou was not paying attention to the man outside the house.
Victoria asked Dianne to repeat what she had shown her. The trainer also emphasized that undoing Loulou’s habit is going to take a while. Mario fears that her wife might be too lazy to continue following Victoria’s advice.
After working with Loulou, Victoria also trained the couple’s other dog, Buster. He is a puppy who needed to be taught impulse control. The trainer also used the training session as an opportunity to bring Dianne and Mario closer together.
If Buster could resist the snack on Victoria’s right hand, he gets rewarded with a treat on the other hand. Buster was able to control his impulses in a short amount of time. Dianne and Mario’s jaws dropped as they witnessed something they thought was impossible.
Victoria continued to monitor the couple’s progress even after she left their home. Dianne still struggles with training Loulou, but they are making progress. The couple’s relationship has also gotten better.
