In Licking County, Ohio, a couple of small mixed breed puppies was transferred from a shelter to a nonprofit organization called Licking County Humane Society because they were very fearful. The dogs, Donna and Karan, had not experienced constant socializing with people, so they were anxious in the company of humans.
The animal caregivers made daily efforts to earn their trust. The pair started coming out of their shell after several months of interaction with loving people. They started greeting the caregivers with wagging tails and wet kisses.
The shelter workers noticed that Donna and Karan were a bonded pair. They were only comfortable with each other’s company. Therefore, the workers looked for adopters who were willing to take them both. The dogs needed to have a home with a fence and no kids or other overactive pets.
However, during adoption day events, Donna and Karan never warmed up to strangers. They were shy around strangers, so they kept getting overlooked.
Despite the efforts of the shelter workers to find adopters, they were still unsuccessful at getting them adopted. Although Donna and Karan’s story made it to the news twice, no one seemed to want to adopt them together. More than 300 days had passed, and they were still waiting for the family who would take them. However, the shelter workers kept posting online and giving reassurances that they were sweet dogs.
As their first anniversary at the shelter drew near, the family they had been waiting for finally came to take them home. The Peori-Humbert family made the adoption official after Donna and Karan spent 347 days in the shelter.
The family met all the requirements that the pair needed to live a stress-free and happy life. Donna and Karan even got to have two gentle fur siblings. Life could not get better than that.
