Spc. Alec Alcoser was six months into his deployment in Afghanistan when he and his K9 partner faced the most challenging moment of their lives. During a routine patrol, they were suddenly caught in the middle of an attack, and both of them had no choice but wait until the lethal episode stopped.
Even though Alec and the dog, a specially trained German Shepherd named Alex, were together for just several months, they have already developed a very strong bond. The two spend their days and nights together, working, playing, and sleeping by each other’s side.
Their story could have ended tragically, but fortunately, fate had other plans for them.
Suicide bomber
The horrifying incident happened when Alec was doing his routine patrol with his partner. After rounding a corner, they noticed a local man heading in their direction. Before they knew it, a huge explosion happened, and both the soldier and his dog were on the ground, injured and bleeding.
Although he was stunned and disoriented, Alec realized that the man they saw was a suicide bomber and there was now a firefight happening. He turned his head around and saw Alex by his side, also wounded but choosing to stay with him.
When the attack was over, there were dead bodies on each side. Alec and Alex were in the middle of it all, and miraculously they were alive. But if they didn’t get medical attention soon, their condition will change for the worse.
Emotional reunion
After receiving emergency medical treatment back at their base, both Alec and his partner were sent back to the U.S. for further surgeries and therapy. When they were well enough, they met again at the country’s capital where they received Purple Heart awards for their bravery. Their reunion was very emotional and showed how much they missed each other.
Sadly, they had to part ways again. Alec was still recuperating, and Alex had his injured leg amputated and was training to walk again. Their time apart was only temporary, though. Once both fully recovered, The soldier formally adopted his now retired K9 partner.
